Pet Portraits for Animal Rescue helping Homeless Dogs

Looking back to move forward.

The above image pictures nine boxers and boxer mixed breeds I painted prior to 2015. Looking back at some of the works I did for pet rescue or as commissioned paintings reminds me that my paintings brought aid to homeless dogs and joy to people.

SOS, Saturday of Shipments

I love sitting outside early mornings listening to birdsong. The little mockingbird must have found his wings. We never saw him again. Even with a background of tires rolling on pavement and the occasional too loud revving of an automobile engine in the 20 mph zone outside the fence, the birdsong chorus overpowers with a morning melody.

Today I will ship two paintings (Ernie Dal and the fawn) to one person, a new collector. Then I will get back into my oil paints to finish the spots on Daisy Dal who has been waiting in the wings for too long.

The air is dry and cool this morning, cool for a Texas summer that hasn't yet officially begun, a good day for painting. I love Saturday! All I need is a fairy godmother to clean the house... A girl can wish.

As a child, I was reprimanded for daydreaming. Today my daydreams morph into paintings.

Baby Portrait Colored Pencil Art in Progress

Work in Progress
colored pencil
4x4 inches
A family portrait promised months ago is now on my drawing board. This progress image shows the portrait at about the half way stage. Layers of colored pencil are built up lightly until the desired values are reached. A small 4x4 portrait like this can require more effort than a larger work, but the small format seems perfect for this portrait of Alexis at three months old.

An image of the final portrait will be posted when done. I love painting children. Commissions accepted.

Texas Landscape, House, Trees, colored pencil Western art

February 19, 2009
Today's Painting:  A colored pencil rendering of one of our fast disappearing landscapes shows an old house that was there when I was a child but today is collapsed. I suppose the termites had a good meal. This is original and uniquely mine on a 6"x4" postcard size watercolor paper with rounded corners. It will be shipped with a backer mat included. When sold, this painting will generate a 10% donation to True Blue Animal Rescue in central Texas, aka T-bar.org ... so visit them at their website to see their good works.

"Vanishing Landscapes"
6"x4" colored pencil on cp watercolor paper, unframed

Continuing the collage of my life in Texas, I painted this postcard sized image of an old house on the Whitaker place in Houston County, Texas.  The house has all but fallen now, but while I was a child growing up in the country, this is the scene we would drive by on our way to town. The 500+ acres of land surrounding this once homestead are now for sale.  I'm hoping it will go to someone who cares about keeping the land intact rather than subdividing it for import of pre-manufactured homes. What a beautiful site for a new country home ecologically friendly with a covered porch surrounding the house.  I would almost be willing to design and offer a custom house plan pro bono (or for a negotiated very low fee) just to get someone to keep this landscape intact.  Of course, I would rather it be me.  If I could afford it, I'd buy it myself, design my dream house and move back to the country.

Today's Blessing: Warm weather, Spring showers, Daffodils, Azaleas and wild flowers starting to bloom in southeast Texas.

Sunflower Work-in-Progress

For the 4th of a sunflower series, this work-in-progress shows a little bit of my process when using colored pencil. This is Mi-Tientes orange toned paper which creates my middle tone. I add the lights and the darks to come up with an image through negative painting (or rendering, as my architectural background would have me call it in this case).  Still, I start with the blank paper and create the image with tone as I work. It's rather like sculpting in 2-D since the image comes to life out of layers of tone instead of an initial contour drawing. If you don't see it now, you'll see it on the next progress post. I'll finish this one some time this week, but I have some other work to finish first.

This is one more piece to the collage I paint of my life in Texas.

Pink and Green Flower Painting, Mixed Media Floral Art, Valentine's Day Gift, Birthday Gift

Valentine's Day Gift Art

Today's Painting is suitable for use as a Valentine's Day Gift or birthday gift. I have taken a bit of artistic license in painting this flower by using colors of my choice, not necessarily colors from nature. The soft pinks and greens against a darker background create a painting that will be enjoyed all year long.

Texas on the Line, clothesline and old barn, western art landscape by V. Bridges Hoyt

"Texas on the Line" © V. Bridges Hoyt 2009
Texas on the Line, clothesline and old barn, landscape, painting by Vernita Bridges Hoyt

About the Place:
Typical of a Texas landscape, this barn differed because there were clothes hanging on a line in the old barn. I found this barn scene many years ago. I doubt that this particular barn is still standing, but there are others similar. The setting for this scene is again in Houston County which is the oldest county in the state of Texas. Houston County sits smack-dab in the middle of east Texas along the Old San Antonio Road with Crockett as its county seat, named of course after Davy Crockett who camped overnight on his way to defend the Alamo. It may also be one of the poorest counties, per capita, in Texas.

My freehand sketch provided the base for this mixed media painting. Includes 10"x8" mat and backer board. Ready to frame.

This colored pencil study of a Beefmaster bull is another of my recent sketches. An impromptu sketch says worlds about an artist. This one speaks of my youth on the farm. Dad would always have a few named pets that stayed with us for a lifetime.

Thank you for helping animal rescue.
