Keep Plugging Away at Paintings

Hello. Sometimes I feel like I keep plugging away and wonder when the fantastic results might be coming my way. 

The still life on the left is titled Grandma's Camera and was painted several years back and was sort of a breakthrough painting for me and is one of my favorites I ever painted. This old box camera belonged to my maternal grandmother. I had at one point shown the painting to be sold. It was purchased by a dear friend Miss Dot who returned the painting to me a few year's later before her death. How sweet was that! She knew how much personal connection was in the painting.

The still life on the right was painted since the one above but still several years ago. This one simply titled Dogwood Crockery and is another of my favorites I ever painted. This painting pictures dogwood flowers on branches off my late mother's dogwood tree. Since Mom was already gone, I gave it to my Aunt Mollie. One of my cousins now has the painting. I think she loves it as much as I do.

Pet Portraits for Animal Rescue helping Homeless Dogs

Looking back to move forward.

The above image pictures nine boxers and boxer mixed breeds I painted prior to 2015. Looking back at some of the works I did for pet rescue or as commissioned paintings reminds me that my paintings brought aid to homeless dogs and joy to people. 

To end a creative block, start being more aware of your good traits, talents, and experiences.

Dalmatian Pet Portraits in Oil Paint

Progress has been slow on the four dalmatian portraits. Inevitably, when art commissions are begun, jobs simultaneously arrive on the other business front, and I must schedule my 18 hour days tightly. I am appreciative. All work is good! 

The first two pet portraits of Daisy and Molly have been completed. I am working on the third one of Memphis now, leaving one more to paint after Memphis.

Log Cabin Law Office of Sam Houston

Huntsville, Texas

This painting depicts the historical log cabin interior of the law office of Sam Houston located alongside his dog trot house in Huntsville, Texas. Painted from a photo I shot through the door on the south side, the painting includes a desk, two chairs, law books, and the interior logs and window on the north side of the cabin. A gun powder horn hangs from the chair. History has it that Houston would not allow any woman to enter the law cabin, not his wife nor any female servant. Houston's dog trot house and the law cabin are on the historical register along with the steamboat house where Sam Houston died. All three structures are located in a park across from Sam Houston University in Huntsville.

Classic Reality Art Exhibit

I do believe this is the longest time I've ever gone without blogging, but I had nothing new to show you and still have nothing new to show. However, I will be exhibiting 12 oil paintings that were completed within the past three years ... well, 2009 and 2010. (I got very little painting done in 2011 when Thor pup was a baby and recovering from his emergency stomach surgery, and I can count only four small paintings completed in 2012.) My daily painting routine needs a revival, but I digress.

Saturday's exhibit will be a part of a larger exhibition at Hardy & Nance St. Studios in Houston. This will be my first exhibit with JoMar Visions in the warehouse converted to artist studios. Wish I were close enough to have a studio there. I am not.

I am hoping some of my 12 paintings will find a collector and a wall of their own.

Come on out to Hardy & Nance St. Studios and wind your way through the hallways of the converted warehouse building until you find JoMar Visions at the back of the building. Enjoy viewing all the paintings along the way, but wait to purchase until you've seen the artworks of the 22 local artists exhibiting with JoMar Visions on Saturday, September 15 from 12:00 noon - 7:00 pm, 902 Hardy St., Houston, Texas. Now I must get some sleep. I've been up late for three nights during this week hanging paintings, then making labels and tonight pulling together the last minute details of my exhibit. Saturday morning I will be up early.

November Art Shows in Texas

October-November are the two busiest months for festivals in Texas. This year I will be showing paintings on November 12 at the 4th Annual Genny Wood Memorial Art Show and Sale in Bullard, Texas.  Below is a very small sampling of paintings to be included in the show [Note: the sunflowers on upper left and lower right sold this week but I have more sunflower paintings.] More to come.

Additionally, four of my paintings have been juried into The Spirit of Texas: Annual Artists of Texas Exhibit at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas.  [More about exhibit to come on another day.]

About This Painting:
This painting comes from my soul. Originally of one lone tree titled The Christ Tree, this painting evolved to become two trees standing side-by-side but separate, roots holding tightly to rocky ground, branches intertwined for support while reaching above crags, cold mountaintops and clouds for new life, a higher level of understanding and peace.

CAT FISH TAILS, Breaking News: Cat Fishing off Galveston Pier Snags Trout

Last year before Hurricane Ike blew across the Gulf of Mexico, I took a little weekend trip to Galveston with my daughter and grandson. I came back with lots of photos and videos of grandson fishing off the 61st Street Fishing Pier which would be blown away by Ike two months later. I began a figurative work of the boy fishing and somehow, this little painting found its way into the mix. I still have not completed the figurative of grandson, but I'm ready to get back to it.

As is my way, I like to play with words in painting titles. Here, inspired by my grandson who caught one fish after another, is Cat Fish Tails.  Maybe the big one got away.

"I'm Up a Tree!" baby raccoon wildlife, oil painting

This morning I finished painting the newborn raccoon that I met at Friends of Texas Wildlife in Magnolia, Texas. The wildlife rescue organization rehabs orphaned wildlife to be released into the wild again when old enough.

A while back this little raccoon kit was found crawling alone on a concrete driveway ... and hungry. Unfortunately, one only realizes the teeny size of these babies when seeing them face to face. This wee one fits in a woman's hand with head poked between two fingers and foot extended at about the heel of the palm. Hold up your hand and think about how very small this wee critter really is. The tree in my painting is a small sapling of a tree but without the comparison of raccoon to human hand, it's difficult to grasp the baby's small size. And CUTE ... so cute!

The Orphan Pup, Animal Rescue

Painted when I was a child of 10 years old, this was my first oil painting. I find it interesting that my subject way back then was an orphan pup and today, 52 years later, I paint for animal rescue. Naturally, this painting remains in my private Artist's Collection; however, I have other paintings available, and I do accept commissions ... so think about having your favorite pet's portrait painted.

About the time the winter blues have really set in, the Cardinal appears to brighten the day.

This is another of my mother's beloved birds--the red bird, the Cardinal introducing the first springtime color after winter. Today's Painting: This little blue house sits across the plaza from my art studio in Old Town Spring, Texas. Unlike west Texas, trees are abundant in the southeast of the State. The architecture in Old Town Spring includes Victorian and Craftsman cottages alike.
