Border Collie Best Friend Photos

To read Brooke's blog about her recovery after rescue, click here to read; then click on the right arrow above the Serendipity post.

Border Collie Brooke has proven to be my best friend over the past four years. Brooke is 12+ years old now. She will remain my best friend for the time we have together.

To read a little about the herding nature and intelligence level of Border Collies, click on the Amazon link at left and then read the sample pages included online  with the book info. If you purchase a book through my blog link, a small referral fee will be sent to Brooke and me. Thanks! Age 13 is said to be the typical maximum age a Border Collie reaches. If true, then Brooke and I have about one more year together. She is aging (as am I), but she takes the years in stride. We finally have control of her allergies (and mine). Click on Serendipity to read about her recovery from all the other health problems that plagued Brooke when she was rescued.

The postcard has rounded corners and an address block on the back side; however, I suggest inserting into an envelope before mailing to keep it dry in transit. Although I use the finest watercolor paints and a permanent ink, the painting could become damaged if mailed unprotected. Watch for more in this series of whimsical and lighthearted postcard paintings.

This painting is a part of the September AHAA Challenge to complete one artwork for each of the 14 Art Helping Animals official supported charities. I will have finished this challenge in only two weeks time due to the mid-September interruption of Hurricane Ike. That's how this postcard series was born.

Pink and Green Flower Painting, Mixed Media Floral Art, Valentine's Day Gift, Birthday Gift

Valentine's Day Gift Art

Today's Painting is suitable for use as a Valentine's Day Gift or birthday gift. I have taken a bit of artistic license in painting this flower by using colors of my choice, not necessarily colors from nature. The soft pinks and greens against a darker background create a painting that will be enjoyed all year long.

Texas on the Line, clothesline and old barn, western art landscape by V. Bridges Hoyt

"Texas on the Line" © V. Bridges Hoyt 2009
Texas on the Line, clothesline and old barn, landscape, painting by Vernita Bridges Hoyt

About the Place:
Typical of a Texas landscape, this barn differed because there were clothes hanging on a line in the old barn. I found this barn scene many years ago. I doubt that this particular barn is still standing, but there are others similar. The setting for this scene is again in Houston County which is the oldest county in the state of Texas. Houston County sits smack-dab in the middle of east Texas along the Old San Antonio Road with Crockett as its county seat, named of course after Davy Crockett who camped overnight on his way to defend the Alamo. It may also be one of the poorest counties, per capita, in Texas.

My freehand sketch provided the base for this mixed media painting. Includes 10"x8" mat and backer board. Ready to frame.

Landscape Watercolor Painting of Trees on a Hill

Today's Painting: Landscapes of trees on hills abound in east Texas where the hills are rolling and the vegetation is lush, not at all like the dry western parts of the State. Snow is not typical in east Texas, but infrequently we get a slight powdery dusting. I can remember only one winter out of my youth when approximately six inches fell, and that was a real treat for all the children. Today's painting could represent anywhere there is winter. This one is personal and shall remain in my Artist's Collection, but I do accept commissioned work. Just email me at the address below.

EEK! It's a Mouse (and scary pumpkin)

© 2008 Vernita Bridges-Hoyt
This is another of my postcard painting series in watercolor and ink featuring a pumpkin and a mouse. The pumpkin appears to have a face on the shadowed side if you look closely, but it's not a jack-o-lantern. Who is afraid of who? The mouse or the pumpkin? Each of this series is painted on a postcard with rounded corners and address block on the back side. However, I recommend you insert the postcard inside a protective envelope to keep it dry during transit. Better still, just frame and enjoy it on your wall. This one benefits TBAR True Blue Animal Rescue in Texas. They gathered and delivered needed supplies to animal rescue organizations in some of the worst hit areas of Hurricane Ike. A portion will also be donated to the Houston SPCA who is housing a lot of the Galveston evacuated pets.

TRACKING IKE, a stormy seascape

© 2008 Vernita Bridges-Hoyt
Self-explanatory, this piece was inspired by the recent Hurricane Ike as it surged into Galveston, Texas. The 61st Street Fishing Pier and many other buildings would be swept away by the force of the raging sea. I have used mixed media of watercolor, acrylic and ink on this one. The postcard features rounded corners and an address block on the back side. However, I recommend inserting it into an envelope before mailing to keep it dry and undamaged during transit. Better still, just frame this one and add it to your postcard art collection. More to come.

A few comments received on this piece:
1. This is a powerful piece. The water is churning and the structure is ghostly. Out of this disaster you are producing some wonderful art. --DM

2. This painting is full of power - absolutely. You really made something special out of Ike. --DJ

3. You have really captured the rage of the hurricane. You feel if you keep looking at it the rest of the Pier will disintegrate before your eyes. --VH

4. I agree with the comments about the power of this piece. It is raw power. I love that the color is associated with the storm's ferocity and that the ink just shows the barest elements of the pier. It really is as if the structure is ghostly! You definitely capture the feelings of watching bits and pieces of the town being picked apart and washing away. --DC

5. Yes...ghostly is a great description! The pier looks like it has given up its life in the storm. And those turbulent waters are gnawing away at what little life is left. It's truly a disturbing and powerful piece! --MJ

6. You really captured the angry sea. I can see the water moving. --ES

7. This shows the surrounding engulfing sea with all God's power as a major force not to be taken lightly. What a message this one has! --KS

Dancing Woman in Red

This painting was inspired by those women I know who dance through life's challenges.

Sometimes dancing is fun. Sometimes dancing is necessary to survive. Sometimes it's a slow dance ... sometimes a fast dance ... sometimes it's a rock and roll dance and when the music stops suddenly, you keep on whirling. You take time to catch your breath, then start dancing again.
