I’ve been away from the blog and the studio too long for comfort. It’s time to get back to both painting and blogging. 

Since the start of Josianne on a Blue Stool I have moved my studio twice. After trying two different studios away from home over the course of two years, I learned that I am most prolific and do my best work from home. 

The home studio is where my heART is. 

Painting Van Gogh Sunflowers. Special Offer.

After demonstrating how to paint sunflowers with acrylics in a style similar to Van Gogh, I brought the demo painting home and added some opaque oil paint to the sunflowers and vase. You will notice that my version of "Twelve Sunflowers" was inspired by Van Gogh's painting but did not duplicate exactly. My personality always creeps into each painting I do, and so will yours. This is as it should be because as an artist, we each want to develop a personal style. If you are being true to yourself, your style will always show a bit of your personality in each painting you do.

Life in Texas has been a little strange this year with first the April flood that caused heavy flooding from the roof down in the DaVinci Artists Gallery where I show my paintings in Tomball. That, of course, put a stop to showings until the gallery is restored to former glory. Aside from teaching a sunflower class to raise funds for replacement of electronics lost in the flood, I have found it next to impossible to paint in 2016.

In the meantime, I resorted to showing existing art in my Etsy shop (link at the bottom of this post), but I'm ready to show paintings on the blog again. I'm hoping to find my muse again through this blog and the sunflower art. Help me by supporting my art, and remember to find your sale coupon.

April Showers and First Light Oil Painting on Wood

The old adage "April showers" has certainly proved to be true this year and last year. Where February in past years seemed to be our wettest month, April has become the "month of floods" in southeast Texas.

In late February / first of March, I moved my art studio downstairs to a much smaller space where I do not have ample storage room for existing art inventory. Therefore, I am offering some paintings for sale at reduced prices. Click on the image or the caption to read a full description of "First Light" which was painted April 2015 after last year's storms. The light and texture are really nice in this painting. You just can't see the texture in a digital image. I wish you could. "First Light" has been reduced to half the original list price. This is a real steal for an oil painting of this quality. If you want it, grab it before I change my mind.

I feel like Alice in Wonderland falling down the rabbit hole. I'm late. I'm late! I started out ahead. How did I get to be late? Two commissioned paintings completed, working on the third to be finished today (that's the plan), I will be left with two more to paint before December 31. How did it get to be December 18 so quickly? Only one week until Christmas 2014. Another year almost over. I must get back to painting now.

I painted this watercolor sketch of people (and a dog) while in Florida in a watercolor class. The class was conducted by Wyna Woodford, Montana. We painted a town street in one-point perspective. I will show you my street painting after I've completed it.

We could crop the image above to derive a vertical composition or horizontal composition as shown in the two images here and below.

The mat may not appear orthogonal to the edges, but you will get the idea. This is an old toss around mat I keep for trying out different compositions.








Cropping this painting creates a new mood and composition. Or show it all and frame as a square, as above.

Oil paint colors in this rhythmic composition include cadmium red, chromium oxide green, ultramarine blue, ivory black and titanium white. This painting is on a stretched canvas. The canvas, including the wrapped edges, was initially toned with a pale wash of cadmium yellow as a background before additional colors were applied.

As I painted, I realized this lone tree and landscape painting in shades of gray is a metaphor for the life of elderly people who live alone and die alone. Ultimately we each die alone, even when family members and friends are around us. The elderly need not be abandoned to live alone if we each do our part to befriend seniors, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends. Out of respect for life, we need to befriend this older generation of people who encompass years of wisdom and life experience. Although some may be losing memories, our presence can comfort them. With an open mind, we can help them and ourselves by giving a little time and showing a healthy respect for the lives of our elderly.

Enchanted Evening

ART.  Some Dachshund is having an enchanted evening in the flower garden.  Enchanted Evening is painted in my Texas version of Impressionism.  Painted alla prima (all in one session), Enchanted Evening was painted with a palette knife and features lots of texture. The oil painting will fit directly in a 14 x 11 inch frame.

I have always liked this dreamy, impressionist painting. When I see the little Dachshund pup dressed in evening clothes and smelling the deep red flowers, I am reminded of that Rodgers and Hammerstein song from the movie South Pacific—Some Enchanted Evening, You may see a Stranger.... The song is stuck in my mind now. I'll be humming it all evening long.

Enchanted Evening was painted in 2009 and was inspired by a Dachshund photo taken by Jamie Thompson of her precious BellaGlyn. Although I used much artistic license in my interpretation of BellaGlyn, I obtained written permission before using Jamie's photo for reference. Jamie has seen and approved the painting.

I always wonder what makes a painting sell when it does. Two other of my paintings from 2009 have recently sold. Maybe the timing is right for Enchanted Evening to find a wall and a home of its own and to help Dachshund rescue at the same time.

The following piece was written in December 2009 after the painting was completed. In light of our  July 2012 rains in the greater Houston area, the story holds meaning today as it did when first written. There is only the mention of Border Collie Brooke as Thor Boxer pup had not yet come into our lives.

LIFE.  December 2009.  Tuesday afternoon I drove to South Houston on business and had dinner with an art patron and friend. As we ate, the rain started to fall, the sky grew darker, and after dinner ...

Dalmatian Lady in Black Pearls, Moon Spots oil painting

ART.  I gave up on finding my moon reference photo and just imagined a moon in the background. This is Lady in Black Pearls aka Moon Spots.  The painting was painted in 2009 and listed to help Dalmatian rescue, but alas, Lady is another Dalmatian painting that has been waiting around patiently for a rightful home to come along. Like homeless Dalmatians, this painting needs a home of its own.

As I uploaded this image, I glanced at the blog sidebar with a beginning date of January 2005. My mind jumped to December 29, 2005. I quickly realized that my blog post of Happy Birthday to my mother in June of that year was to be my last birthday wish to her. A sudden sadness of grief flooded my heart, my throat and my eyes.

We never know when last moments will come. We need to make all the moments good enough to become warm memories. 

*Expressionists characteristically reject traditional ideas of beauty or harmony and use distortion, exaggeration, and other nonnaturalistic devices in order to emphasize and express the inner world of emotion. The paintings of El Greco and Grünewald exemplify expressionism in this broad sense, but the term is also used of a late 19th and 20th century European and specifically German movement tracing its origins to Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and James Ensor, which insisted on the primacy of the artist's feelings and mood, often incorporating violence and the grotesque.

Blue Dachshund Christmas

I am busy painting pet portraits that were commissioned just in the past couple of weeks. Since I can't post those, I'll share this Christmas painting that I did in 2009. This is 9x12 inches and primarily watercolor but is my wash and line style with some gold paint highlights on the Christmas bow and the doxie's collar.

The painting was published on Christmas cards for Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue. I provided them with a high resolution image and kept the original, but I am offering the original painting for sale this week and will donate a portion of the sale back to CCDR.
