Green Apples and Bread, Still Life Oil Painting

Green Apples and Bread
copyright Vernita Bridges Hoyt
oil painting on canvas, 20" H x 16" W
in a private collection

I painted this still life at the 2009 Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. The still life was set up for about a dozen artists who were painting in different media. I was one of only two oil painters in the group. The others painted watercolor or pastels. It was really great to be painting plein air (outdoors) in an art festival setting, and the Woodlands Waterway is the perfect environment for it. People milled all around and stopped to ask questions as I painted. That interaction itself inspires an artist, or at least it does me.

Border Collie Soccer, oil painting

... and then there was the Dog, the rescued border collie who came to me at the age of 8 years. Border Collie Brooke shared my life for six years. She continually brought me that wet, slime and dirt covered soccer ball from the back flower bed and with her eyes said, "Let's Play Soccer." I finally realized, "Hey! This is a soccer ball. I can kick it. I don't have to touch it with my hands."  Brooke was even happier playing soccer the real way ... with feet. The ball would go rolling across the yard. She would run after and retrieve it, dropping it at my feet so I would kick it again.

Border Collie Soccer is an oil painting on 5x7 inch panel. It was painted with brushes in my representational style. This painting began with a quick sketch (brush dipped in thinned paint) and continued with strokes of tone laid deliberately to build the image. These small daily oil paintings typically take 2 - 3 hours from start to finish.

This painting sold quickly to another border collie owner. After Brooke crossed over the rainbow bridge, I wished I had kept the painting. I miss Border Collie Brooke. She was a sweet girl. Just look at the love in her eyes.

Grandma's Camera

detail image of still life oil painting by Vernita Hoyt
Detail of Grandma's Painting

I paint stories. This painting titled "Grandma's Camera" featured items with memories for me: the old box camera that belonged to my maternal grandmother, aloe vera plant from my mother, and eucalyptus leaves saved from a Pier I visit in an earlier life of mine. The original painting hangs on a wall in my home.

Going through each draft post is like walking down memory lane. Following is the draft post dated 12/02/06 which offered a professionally printed giclee of the painting on eBay. The giclee is no longer available.

Josianne on Blue Stool, mixed media work in progress

Josianne on a Blue Stool
Mixed media work in progress

I’ve been away from the blog and the studio too long for comfort. It’s time to get back to both painting and blogging.

Since the start of Josianne on a Blue Stool I have moved my studio twice. After trying two different studios away from home over the course of two years, I learned that I am most prolific and do my best work from home.

The home studio is where my heART is.

Sunflower Arles Memories

A painting is like a newly constructed home. It grows on you after you've lived with it for awhile.
—Vernita Hoyt

Sunflower Arles (pictured below) was painted several years ago and hung on a wall of my home until October when I decided to show it in the DaVinci Artists Gallery as one of my featured paintings. Since that time, people have complimented me on the painting. Sunflower Arles has grown on me. I always liked it because the painting had much personal meaning for me, and that personal meaning has grown as time passes.

Sunflower Arles Blue, oil on linen 20x16 in.
NFS

There was a time when I would offer every painting for sale, but no more. As years passed, I learned that some paintings are more valuable than money.  The painting Sunflower Arles takes me back to France, sitting at a sidewalk cafe with my daughter, buying French perfume for my mother, a week stay in a medieval village, breaking bread for breakfast with a group of travelers from different European countries, the amphitheater and aquaducts in Provence, walking through the market in Arles where Van Gogh painted, and a second week for a tour of the great cathedrals and the art museums of Paris. Some paintings need to stay with the artist. Sunflower Arles is such a painting. Sunflower Arles is a painting of memories.

Triple Digits. Shades of Gray. Landscape Oil Painting

In Texas, shades of gray come in winter and again in the hot days of summer as grass and pastures dry out and wildfires burn.

SHADES OF GRAY

oil on panel 7 x 5 inches

Contact me here.

This summer is one of the hot ones when temperatures are triple digit and the heat index is up to 111 degrees F just 40 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Southeast Texas is "cooled" by gentle ocean breezes while farther inland, Austin and Dallas-Ft.Worth areas are ever hotter in real degrees. The high humidity of Southeast Texas creates a stifling steam bath causing danger of heat exhaustion or heat stroke because bodies lose the natural ability to perspire and cool themselves. Greater Houston has been in heat advisory alerts for six weeks since triple digits began in July.

First Light in Landscape Art. Blogs vs Social Media.

First Light in the Landscape

Weather, weather, and more weather. That's Texas for you. We are coming out of several years of drought and have forgotten what a typical Texas springtime is about. I do believe our prayers for an end to the drought have been answered. God is good.

Thoughts of Blogs and Social Media

There are times when I wish Facebook had not overtaken blogs. Blogs are more like writing a letter; however, with either format the world gets to read over my shoulder. Technology lures us into social media. Facebook can capture my attention for hours if I'm not careful to watch the time. I am at the stage of life now that I don't want to constantly watch the clock, but no matter how I try to live in my own time, there is always a schedule that lures me back to clock watching. My clock is now on the little bar at the top of my iPhone screen. Technology. I have only one clock hanging on the wall. That is in my art studio, and I find the ticking of a wall clock transports me into another era when time moved slower. As children we seemingly had all the time in the world, but as adults we create schedules for ourselves and want to move faster and finish more deadlines. Maybe the battery will run down, or maybe it's just that my battery is running down.

Old Flatbed Truck. Painting with Zain. Country Life.

Old Flatbed Truck:

Old Flatbed Truck
oil painting 16 x 20 inches
copyright Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2007
NFS

Painting with Zain:

On one trip about 10 years ago, my young grandson Zain accompanied me to the farm. The young Zain told me he is not a country boy and reminded me that he was born in the city. Nevertheless, I insisted that Zain ride with me out to the back pasture where I knew there were some good painting subjects. One such subject was the old flatbed truck that had died and been parked there. The landscape had found a way up through the bed of the truck, and a tree grew. Zain was fascinated by the tree growing in the bed of the old truck. I parked the Jeep. Zain and I sat in the back of the Jeep and painted this picture of the tree growing through the old flatbed truck. I offered Zain the paint brush and he painted in the horizon line and some of the sky and foreground. I let him also place brushstrokes of paint on the tree and the truck. By the time we were done painting, it was obvious to me that Zain had a good time in the country that day.

Some paintings are too good to be sold.

The Country Life:

I sometimes think about all this generation of city kids is missing by not knowing the country life, the slower life without video games, computers and other high tech equipment. The country life has its own type of immediate gratification. All one must do is open eyes and look out across the beautiful landscape, breathe the fresh air, and feel the sunshine. And in the above instance … PAINT!

Grayscale does it. Sunflower on the easel. Trust your instinct. Purchase art online.

SUNFLOWER SOLO

oil painting on linen 12x9 inches
Grayscale does it! I convert a work-in-progress to digital grayscale to check values. The grayscale image shows me where I need to make adjustments.

Currently, I have a sunflower on the easel while a pet portrait dries enough for the next glaze of oil paint.

Trust your own instinct. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone else's.

Dalmatian Dog Art. Oil Painting of Spots. Texas Artist Vernita Bridges Hoyt.

A Dalmatian Dog named Memphis …

Dalmatian Dogs have Unique Spot Patterns …

Did you know that each Dalmatian has a unique spot pattern … like a finger print? There is no making up the spots. If you want the dog to be recognized, you have to get those spots in the right places along with the usual features in the face—the look in the eyes, the placement of the nose, the whiskers, the shape of the mouth, the size of the ears, etc. Yes, I am having fun painting the Dalmatian portraits.

Sunflower Garden Oil Painting

Sunflower Garden

Wanting to paint sunflowers to get me through the winter doldrums, I have been painting on this canvas in bits and pieces while taking care of other commitments. I called this one "Sunflower Garden" because I was inspired by the sunflowers that grew in my garden one summer not long ago.

SUNFLOWER GARDEN

Our weather here in southeast Texas is semi-tropical. The weather is mostly warm and humid, but winter brings weather where one day is warm and the next is freezing. Temperatures are up and down, changing almost daily. Painting sunflowers in February reminds me of summertime.

Claim this sunflower painting as yours! The painting is available for purchase at http://vbhoyt.com where I show oil paintings.

HURRICANE IKE
September 13, 2008: Hurricane Ike was the category 4 storm that convinced the population of Galveston that the city still was not hurricane proof 108 years after the Turn of the Century Storm, although a seawall had been built and many other warning systems were in place. Click here to view the permanent Galveston shoreline changes made by Hurricane Ike. Click here to view the damages to Houston as reported by Centerpoint Energy.

THE 1900 STORM
September 8, 1900: In the years before hurricanes were named, the Great Hurricane wiped out Galveston, Texas, and killed over 6,000 people. A few years back, I read Erik Larson's best seller book Isaac's Storm which is still available. I recommend you read this book if you haven't. The book is part historical documentation from the viewpoint of Isaac Cline the Galveston weatherman who tried to warn about the approaching storm and part historical fiction based on narratives told by survivors. I had always heard of the Turn of the Century Storm, but until I read Larson's book I never understood the depth of destruction to the Island and to the people living there. You will never view a hurricane in the same light after reading about The 1900 Storm. Click here to view more information about the Great Hurricane.
